How to build an on-demand delivery app
The apps, dispatch logic and architecture behind an on-demand delivery product, and how to phase the build from a single-city pilot.
An on-demand delivery product is three apps and one dispatch brain: customer, courier and merchant apps, plus the system that assigns jobs. Pilot in one city with a handful of merchants before building anything fancy.
What does the MVP need?
| App | Core features |
|---|---|
| Customer | Browse or request, pay, live tracking, order history |
| Courier | Accept jobs, navigation, proof of delivery, earnings |
| Merchant or dispatcher | Order intake, status, issues |
| Admin | Pricing, zones, payouts, support tools |
How is it built?
- Dispatch. Start with simple rules, nearest available courier, before optimising.
- Live location. Real-time maps and updates through WebSockets and a maps provider.
- Offline-first courier app. Couriers lose signal, so scans and proofs sync later. More in our logistics page.
- Payments. Customer payment, courier earnings and merchant payouts through your provider.
- Mobile. Cross-platform apps cover iOS and Android for customers and couriers.
What goes wrong most often?
Over-engineering routing before there are enough orders. Ignoring failed deliveries and refunds. Underestimating courier support. Plan these early.
How long and how much?
Three apps plus an admin portal usually points to a Product Build from $12k, 8 to 14 weeks. A narrower pilot, such as one app and a basic dispatcher, can start as an MVP Sprint from $6k. See mobile app costs. Get a fixed quote.
FAQ
Do I need my own couriers?
Not necessarily. Many products start with partner couriers or merchant-owned delivery.
Can I add routing optimisation later?
Yes. Start simple, then add it once volume justifies it.
