How to build a marketplace app
The features, architecture and build order for a two-sided marketplace app, and the early decisions that decide whether it can grow.
A marketplace connects buyers and sellers, so you build two products at once plus the payments between them. Start with one side, one category and one city or niche, then widen. The hardest part is not the software. It is getting enough supply and demand to meet.
What features does a marketplace MVP need?
| Area | Buyer side | Seller side | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accounts | Sign-up, profile | Onboarding, verification | Roles, moderation |
| Listings | Search, filters, detail pages | Create and edit listings | Review queue |
| Transactions | Checkout, order history | Orders, payouts | Fees, refunds, disputes |
| Trust | Reviews, messaging | Ratings, response time | Reporting, audit log |
How is a marketplace built?
- Search. Fast filtering over listings needs a proper search engine, not slow database queries. Our e-commerce case study uses Elasticsearch for this.
- Payments. Split payments and seller payouts run through your payment provider, so card data stays with them.
- Admin portal. Moderation, disputes and payouts need a back office from day one.
- Mobile. A cross-platform app in Flutter or React Native covers iOS and Android from one codebase.
What goes wrong most often?
Building every feature before proving one category works. Ignoring disputes and refunds until the first one arrives. Letting buyers and sellers talk outside the platform, which loses you the fee. Plan these in the first sprint.
How long and how much?
A focused marketplace MVP usually fits a Product Build, which starts from $12k and runs 8 to 14 weeks. See what an MVP costs and the pricing page. Your fixed price follows a scoping call. Get a fixed quote.
FAQ
Should I build an app or a website first?
Build the channel your buyers use most. Many marketplaces start with a responsive web app and add a mobile app once demand is clear.
Who handles seller payouts?
Your payment provider. We build the flows, reconciliation and statements around it.
