How to choose a software development agency

Seven checks for choosing a software development agency: pricing model, who builds, IP, proof, process, security and communication.

Choose an agency that quotes a fixed price and date in writing, shows work you can verify, names who will build your product, and leaves you owning all the code. The checks below help you compare agencies on facts, not pitches.

What should you check first?

CheckA good signA warning sign
PricingFixed price and date in writing"We will see" and open-ended hours
Who buildsNamed senior engineersJuniors behind a senior pitch
IP100% yours from day oneLicensed or locked in
ProofCase studies with stack and scopeLogos with no detail
SecurityWritten practices and certified processes"We take it seriously"

How should you compare prices?

Ask each agency for a written scope, price and delivery date. Compare what is included, not only the total. A low number without a date is an estimate, not a price. See what fixed-price development means.

What proof should you ask for?

Ask for case studies that show the problem, the stack and the result. Ask whether you can speak to the engineers who will work on your product. Our case studies show stack and scope for each project.

Who will actually build your product?

Ask who writes the code, who reviews it and who you talk to each week. An agency should name the roles, even if some client names stay private.

What about security and IP?

Ask where your code lives, who has access and what is certified. You should own the repository, the infrastructure and the IP from the first day. Our practices are on the security page.

How do you start safely?

Begin with a small fixed-price piece, such as an MVP Sprint, before committing to a long engagement. You learn how the team works at low risk.

FAQ

Should I choose an agency, freelancers or an in-house team?

It depends on scope and duration. See agency vs freelancers vs in-house.

Is offshore a risk?

It can be, if time zones and communication are not agreed up front. Ask for overlap hours in writing.

How many agencies should I compare?

Two or three is enough. Give each the same brief so the quotes compare.
